SURPRISE GRANTEES

Bertha is often approached by inspiring leaders whose ideas do not clearly fit into our designated program areas. Bertha makes small grants to passionate individuals or organizations with risk taking and flexibility at the core of their ideas. Surprise grants are made spontaneously, and not through solicitations.

SOME SURPRISES

Hilde Back Education Fund: During the 2010 Sundance Film Festival premiere of ‘A Small Act’. The Bertha Foundation was inspired to help grow this exciting Kenyan organization supporting the education of bright students.

Kids Company: The Bertha Foundation decided to support Kids Company after hearing 16 year old Natalie’s story of being homeless and living on a London bus until she met Kids Company.

After shack fires left 5,000 families homeless in Masiphumelele, South Africa, Bertha was moved to provide an emergency grant to Masi Corp, an organization rebuilding houses and ensuring the safety of young children.

On a recent New York City taxi ride, one of the Bertha Directors was inspired by the efforts of his cab driver to build a school in his native Ghana, and made a decision to get the school off the ground immediately.
